Two lama monks, 1928
These two lama monks were summoned to a herder’s private ger to perform healing prayers for a sick member of the family. The prayers are read from the pothi-book, placed on the table in front of them. They lasted for several hours and were accompanied by the splashing sound of the
cymbals and the hollow noise from the skull drum (damero), made of human skull cups, and likewise from the thunderbolt (dortje) – all objects of spiritual power used by the clergy. Photo: Lena Tidemand, 1928.
