The Head of the Ethnographic Department Thomas Thomsen, standing between his two young gifted and upcoming curators: To the left anthropologist Kaj Birket-Smith, who followed Thomsen as Head of Department in 1940, and to the right, archaeologist and arctic researcher Therkel Mathiassen. Both Thomsen and Birket-Smith were highly dedicated to helping Haslund in his endeavour of organising an expedition to Mongolia. Photographer unknown.
