Calendar from Tranquebar 1981
The drawing illustrates a Tamil calendar anno 1981 collected in the fishing community in Tranquebar. For each day is given the date according to three different calendars: the Tamil, Arabic and the Western. The Hindu goddess Laksmi is depicted on the calendar.
In 1985 artist Elsebet Morville produced a series of fourteen drawings for ethnographer Esther Fihl relating to her fieldwork in Tranquebar in 1981. This drawing is of a calendar in the material collection established by Fihl for Moesgaard Museum in 1981. Selected items from the collection were transferred to the National Museum in relation the Tranquebar Initiative (2004-2016).
