No. 128 (Inventory no. 13811). Male figure in bronze, perhaps depicting the Syrian God Haddad. The triangular face has a pointed chin (a beard ?), small mouth, protruding nose and deep eye-sockets. The muscles on the upper arms are prominent, the lower arms are stretched forward. The nipples are clearly indicated. A torque is placed around the long neck. Short kilt with a belt in which a dagger pommel appears. The lower part of the weapon protrudes below the kilt. The head bears a feather crown which could be an imitation of the Egyptian double crown or a feather crown with the Uraeus snake. The crude feet, the left a little in front of the right, stand on a base with a long stem ending in a tenon that has preserved the shape of the casting channel. Reddish/brown patina. H 15. 0 cm Provenance: Unknown. Bought in Rome 1957. Published: Buhl 1977, 143 (no. 9), depicted p. 147. Comments: Compare a similar piece found in Tall Simriyan (Braidwood 1940, 212, pl. 26). Grasped in the right hand of the Simriyan statuette was an axe, no doubt a “window-axe”. In the right hand was a thunderbolt. Another parallel is from Ras Shamra (Schaeffer 1949, 73, Fig. 31). Our figure is considered to be the male half of a divine couple and is included in a group of bronzes named after Simriyan (Negbi 1961, 114 fig. 5. Porada 1942, 58-59). DATING: In Simriyan the piece was included in the Middle Bronze levels (Braidwood 1940). Negbi considered the group to have been produced within the MB II A-B periods (Albright).
